GNU is actually a shell part of an operating system. (kinda of like the stuff that is connected to an engine in a car, but not the engine itself)
Although GNU is licensed under GPL (GNU Public License)
Red Hat does this all the time with their Red hat operating system, which is a GNU/Linux based operating system. It is very popular in servers for large businesses.
Another example is Linspire operating system.
DansGuardian (a parental control software) is another example, but payment is only required for commercial use.
There is nothing in GPL that says the software you make has to be free, you may have people pay for it.
