How can I reformat or erase the primary harddrive without the OS disc?

I need to erase the hard drive. It’s the one and only hard drive on the computer. I don’t have the OS or boot disc. I have XP. I need to erase everything because I am getting rid of the computer.

For a total security wipe, I like "Darik’s Boot and Nuke" (DBAN), which can be downloaded from:

    http://www.dban.org/

Download the appropriate version, make a bootable CD (or diskette), and boot from it.

DBAN will wipe the ENTIRE disk. Don’t use it if you want to keep the utility partition, or the "factory restore" partition.
