How do I add a security code/key on my router to prevent others from accessing the internet from my computer?
I live in an apartment complex and someone named deanna is using my internet to access the internet. This is causing my internet connection to mess up and someone mentioned getting an access code. How do I do this? Why isn’t turning the ‘Network Sharing’ off option enough???
What brand/model router is it? Go to the manufacturer’s website, search for your model, then look for the product manual. You will see how to enable encryption.
The "Network Sharing" option in Windows has nothing to do w/ your network–just sharing settings on that particular computer.
I assume you have a wireless router. You have to go into your router’s WIFI configuration and set up security so that anyone who wants to connect to the router has the correct security key. Most routers have WPA or WEP security. WPA is more secure.
To set this up, you’ll need to access your router by logging into it with your web browser. Check your router’s manual for details. If you don’t have a manual, you can get the details at the manufacturer’s web site.
I have links for the netgear and linksys sites below.
See the Wiki article for details on Wireless Security if you want to know more.
Because you haven’t setup a password (security code) for your wireless network.
To setup, login to your wireless router by type in the router’s IP address into your browser’s address bar. By default, most routers use 192.168.1.1 as router’s IP address.
So in IE or firefox, type in 192.168.1.1, Enter, a router configuration page should be popup. Go to Wirless network section choose a encryption method, the best choice is WPA (personal), this gives you a better security than WEP.
