How do I retrieve data from the 1st OS when there are two copies of XP in the same drive?

My windows XP got corrupted so i have installed another copy of XP in the same drive. The older os is not working but i need files stored in the desktop of the older os. C:\Documents and settings\old user is not accessible. How do i access those files now from the new OS?

Log in as administrator (not into an administrative account) and everything is accessible. Alternatively, boot with a Linux Live CD and transfer files. Linux ignores Windows "security" restrictions.

(If you had just cleaned the original XP installation and done a repair install you wouldn’t have the problem.)
