In GNU Linux, how can I download updates/add-ons via the shell?

Sort of like apt-get is to Ubuntu or yum is to Redhat?

Aptitude is on there? if not use the get command to download the source of a package manager, and make it from source.

Do you have the package manager called synaptic? It will do all this for you. To use the terminal, you need to know what command is used for the version of Linux you are using. GNU is not a version.
