How to install Linux on a cleaned computer?

Alright, so I’ve gotten my hands on an older desktop and the previous user reformatted the hard drive. Therefore, there is no operating system at all! I want to install Linux onto this system but how do I do that? I heard something about installing Linux onto a thumb drive and having the BIOS boot with the thumb drive and it will install Linux? Could someone please help!

How can I look up the windows access code in my computer?

I have an old XP computer that is finally slowing down. I am thinking about using a recovery disk to wipe out and then rebuild the hard drive. My problem is that I cannot find the original recovery disk. If I want to borrow someone else’s recovery disk, I will need a windows access or licensing code. Is there a way I can look it up in my computer before wiping out the disk, so that I can input it as I replace the windows software in it? Thanks.

Help installing a boot manager or getting onto another partition?

I have my hard drive partitioned into two partitions. One has XP installed and the other has GNU Linux (Debian) installed. I used to be able to choose which operating system to load when i turned the computer on using GRUB boot manager which came packaged with Debian. The problem is that I had to reformat the XP partition and so now I can no longer choose a partition to load but it automatically goes into windows. How can I get back onto Linux when i want to.
Thanks.

How do I install new OS on netbook without an optical drive?

I have the OS as an iso file. I’m assuming that I would partition the hard drive of the netbook, and then mount the image using a program like Alcohol 120%. Then install the OS onto the blank partition. Finally boot the new partition and delete the previous partition. If I’m wrong please let me know. Thank you.
