From my understanding there are several operating systems that run on the Linux platform. Which is the best one?

I am new to linux. I want to construct a new computer that will operate linux. Should I only choose hardware (like a TV tuner card or a sound card) for which there are already linux drivers or are there always workarounds for getting every piece of hardware working on linux even if there are no drivers? Are these workarounds easy to implement or will I spend a lot of time and effort trying to get the hardware to work?
How do I find my sims 3 registration code online?
I own the sims 3 game, and just got a new computer, just about to install it, and I lost my manual, but have the disc. I need to find a way to retrieve the registration code. Is there a way to do it on the sims 3 store? It’s already registered on the profile and everything.
What's a good open source antivirus program?
My brother just bought a new computer two months ago and now he’s having a lot of trouble with it. He thinks that most of the issue is Norton Antivirus.
I’ve suggested to him that he either invest in one like what I run (Kaspersky) or that he search for quality open-source options. Since the latter is free, he would prefer that.
(I’m asking this question for him since he can’t access the internet.)

So I’m building a new computer soon. I really want to start using it straight away. Which OS should I install (of XP and vista) if I plan on upgrading to windows 7 once it comes out? I’d really like the transfer to be quick and painless. Also I’ve heard of people running multiple OS how do you do this?
