Is there any easy (understandable for beginners) and free tutorials around that would allow me to learn programming that I could develop (by experimenting and looking at tutorials) into skills that would allow me to create programs, etc. It just has to start with the basics, preferably not using language that I do not know of and not using programs that I have to buy or have a large download. Something I can make GUIs in.

Something I can program hardware in (PIC/ Picaxe).

Something I can make simulations in.

Something versatile that I can use in a wide variety of things.

Please, no C#, Alice, Scratch, or Greenfoot.

I understand that this is a broad range, so multiple answers are ok.
