Why do new and fast computers start OS as slow as old ones?
I don’t understand why we keep building new and faster computers yet it still takes about the same time from initial boot to OS is up and running at full speed. there must be a way to optimize the programing algorithms, simplify it, or something? Or is there a hardware factor that sets a physical limit ?
cold boot is not only the paradigm to compare a new and old computer.. you would get vast difference between the two if you run heavy programs.. however, you can compare installing same OS with the same set of softwares installed on both.. also you will find that the latest OSes even cannot be installed on old computers as they lack the hardware prerequisites..
my dear friend, there will not be much difference when you put a race between you and the olympic champion for only 5 metres..
so.. got my point
The main reason is as computers have become more complex – so have opperating systems.
Windows Vista is massivly over complicated, and as a result when it was released many newer computers with vista ran slower than older computers on XP.
Some Unix OS are designed to boot quickly. The fastest one I used boasted a 10 second load time and 15 second shut down. Obviously it didn’t do as much as a Windows system.
The more drivers and Programs you have the longer it takes, yes we have increased the Speeds but we also have increased the demands, like more add on more settings better Graphics, try and 64 bit Operating system with a SSD Hard drive and 1Tb Ram it will load instantly, but because us mortal demand bigger and better OP systems and More of everything else we have to wait just a couple Minutes, I used to load VIA Tapes in the good old Day’s it took for and operating System 2 hours to load I’m very happy today.
old machines didnt have much power, storage, or performance but the operating system would take up most of whatever you had at the time. Windows was and still is VERY bad at this.
new machines run fast and have A LOT of power but again the operating system takes a chunk out of it to give a pretty desktop (GUI). Windows is still the worst at robbing a computer of everything it has.
load Windows XP into the same type of PC as Vista.. Vista will look nice but run slow while XP will blaze through.
so, look at what your operating system recommends for RAM and processor speed then double it depending on what you plan on using the machine for.
